We’re celebrating big news in Ellsworth! Two of our amazing educators have been recognized at the state level this fall, earning Teacher of the Year honors.

Teachers of the Year

“I could not be more proud of the incredible educators and leaders who represent the Ellsworth School Department,” says Superintendent Amy Boles. “Over the past two years, our district has been recognized at the state level with multiple major awards—from Teacher and Assistant Principal of the Year honors to the Milliken Educator Award. These achievements are a testament to the passion, professionalism, and dedication of our staff, who work every day to engage and challenge all learners through excellence, growth, and partnership. Our community should take great pride in the talent and heart that define our schools.”

At October’s Maine Career and Technical Education (CTE) Fall Conference, Tara Mason, who teaches Business Leadership & Hospitality at Hancock County Technical Center, was named Maine CTE Teacher of the Year for 2025. Tara is known for putting students first, building strong community partnerships, and bringing real‑world learning into her classroom. Beyond teaching, she also serves as President of ACTE Maine and is one of our advisors for SkillsUSA and for MELMAC.

"Tara Mason truly represents the best of Career and Technical Education. She leads with a student-first mindset, builds strong community partnerships, and continually seeks ways to bring real-world learning into her classroom,” Boles says. “Her passion, professionalism, and dedication to growth—both her students’ and her own—make her deeply deserving of this statewide recognition.”

“Matt Downs is a dedicated educator who brings great energy and enthusiasm to his work every day. He creates a positive environment where all students feel encouraged to participate and find success through movement, teamwork, and perseverance,” Boles says. “We’re proud to see his commitment to students and physical education recognized at the state level as Middle School Physical Education Teacher of the Year.”
