Superintendent's Message

Students, Parents, Citizens and Friends:

I am pleased to welcome you to the Ellsworth School Department website!  The site is designed to be a resource for students, parents, and citizens to learn more about our schools and programs.  We hope you find the information here helpful and encourage you to visit the site often as changes and updates will occur throughout the school year.

The summer of 2016 was one of progress and growth for the ESD.  Included amongst the accomplishments were the continued development of curriculum, instructional practices, and assessments to support the ongoing and successful transition to a proficiency-based instructional model, development and completion of graduation standards and standards for our entire pre-kindergarten through grade twelve which will be made available on-line to citizens, parents, and students, the successful move of our Adult Education program to its new location in the Mill Mall in the University of Maine Center, and continued maintenance and improvements to our facilities and grounds.

As displayed on our home page, the mission of the ESD is “Engaging and Challenging All Students.”  Inherent in our mission is our intent and obligation to meet the needs of all of our students by actively engaging them in a variety of learning experiences and activities and challenging them to higher levels of achievement in academics, co and extra-curricular programs, and in community service.

As we make final preparations for the return of students on September 1 (students pre-kindergarten through grade nine) and September 2 (all students), I remind you that success in achieving our mission is possible not only through the efforts of ESD staff, but also in the support provided by parents, community members, our local business community, and city government.  We are truly appreciative of the support you provide in helping make the Ellsworth School Department one of the premier school systems in the State of Maine.

I encourage you to visit our website often.  If you are not able to find the information you desire, please contact the Office of the Superintendent or one of our schools.

Daniel A. Higgins, Superintendent of Schools
